history

Project

The Cooperative Storage Library Switzerland is the result of a joint project of the Central and University Library Lucerne , the Central Library Zurich , the University Libraries of Basel and Zurich and the Central Library Solothurn . It was financially supported by swissuniversities through the SUK P-2 program .

The libraries have been suffering from lack of space in their magazines for a long time . In some cases, they therefore have to move stocks to external storage facilities. A large shared external storage facility, which meets the requirements in terms of both conservation and library technology, can be centrally planned and jointly managed, is an economical and efficient solution to most libraries' space problems. Moving holdings to the Cooperative Storage Library frees up space in the parent houses for other needs. The works can still be borrowed.

After years of preparation and after a successful referendum in the canton of Lucerne in November 2013, construction of the cooperative storage library began in August 2014.

Due to the realignment of the library and archive strategy as well as the measures to relieve the state budget, the government council of the canton of Aargau decided on December 17, 2015 not to allow the canton of Aargau to join the cooperative storage library under the leadership of the canton of Lucerne.

The project was completed at the end of January 2016 and handed over to operations.

construction

The storage library is not a traditional library that stores your books on shelves. It is operated as a partially automated high-bay warehouse based on a new concept .

To the outside it presents itself as an industrial building with an administrative building in front . The building will be modular . A first module offers space for up to 3.1 million volumes . There is the possibility of expansion up to a capacity of around 14 million volumes. An inerting ensures high fire protection, passive climate control for optimum storage climate for some valuable holdings.

Inside the building, the books are stored in containers on high shelves and managed by means of automatic operating devices . If a user orders a book from the electronic catalog of a library that is in the storage library, a storage and retrieval unit brings the container with the ordered book to the warehouse employee, who prepares it for shipping or makes an electronic or paper copy of a magazine article. A courier service delivers the orders to the respective library up to twice a day.

Duration

A special feature of the Cooperative Storage Library is the so-called collective inventory. This is where the partner libraries' holdings are brought together in a dedicated manner. Especially in the case of magazine volumes, the holdings of multiple copies are relieved, only the best-preserved and complete edition is kept. This frees up urgently needed space in the libraries , but access to the holdings is still retained.

Magazines and magazine articles , especially from the collective inventory, are generally not loaned out. Physical and preferably digital copies are intended to be sent here. Monographs, however, can still be borrowed from the participating libraries .

The cooperative storage library also offers the possibility of services for the libraries involved , such as scanning, copying, cleaning of holdings, small repairs, etc.
