The Central and University Library Lucerne (ZHB Lucerne), the largest library in Central Switzerland , is a cantonal and university library of national importance.

As a general and academic library, it collects, indexes and provides information and media for everyday life and leisure, training and further education, teaching and research. Special attention is paid to the cultural document heritage of the Canton of Lucerne in the special collections ( manuscripts and old prints; graphic collection, image archive; music) and in the area of publications from and about the city and canton of Lucerne, the so-called Lucernensia . As a partner of the Informationsverbund Deutschschweiz IDS, to which all university libraries in German-speaking Switzerland belong, the ZHB coordinates and organizes the regional library network, IDS Luzern. The ZHB also represents the canton of Lucerne as a shareholder in the future service platform for scientific libraries in Switzerland: Swiss Library Service Platform (SLSP). Rudolf Mumenthaler has been Director of the ZHB Lucerne since 2017 .

history

The central library was created in 1951 through the merger of the citizens' library and the cantonal library. The structure of the municipal library, the first public library was opened in the city in 1812, were among precious manuscripts such as the Illustrated Chronicle of Diebold Schilling from the year 1513 and the Collectanea of Lucerne polymath Renward Cysat . From 1894 to 1951, the public library was the federal collection point for Helvetica published before 1848 . In 1809 Josef Anton Balthasar sold his Helvetica collection, which would later become the citizen's library, to the city of Lucerne. The canton library, whose oldest holdings (fragments) date from the 9th century, was founded in 1832. The first complete codex is dated to the middle of the 12th century.

With the merger, the Central Library (ZB) moved into a new building on Sempacherstrasse , designed by Lucerne architect Otto Dreyer . Severe storms caused water damage to the building in July 1960. In 1970 the house bookbinding started operations. In 1983 the ZB introduced the Biblu IT system for cataloging and querying.

In 1998 the central library was merged with the library of the University of Lucerne (since 2000 University of Lucerne ) to form the Central and University Library (ZHB). The library software Aleph has been used since 1999 . After the old card catalog had been digitized, automated lending was put into operation in 2000.

Since 2011 the total holdings are the ZHB Lucerne and beyond the resources of the entire information network German Switzerland Luzern (Lucerne IDS) Online Catalog IDS Lucerne recorded. In 2013, the ZHB, together with other libraries in Central Switzerland, launched DiBiZentral , a digital library for e-books, e-papers, films and music that can be borrowed free of charge. The search tool iluplus was activated in 2014 for research in both offers .

One library, multiple locations

Location Sempacherstrasse

The main building on Sempacherstrasse is a high -quality example of late modern architecture in Switzerland from the point of view of monument preservation . It is part of a park, the Vögeligärtli in the Hirschmatt district, and the individual structures of different heights were arranged around a park-like inner courtyard . In the north there is a marble entrance hall with an office wing. The main rooms grouped around the inner courtyard have a room height appropriate for their use: At the entrance you enter the catalog room, with a portrait gallery of important Lucerne residents on the walls, followed by two reading rooms. A magazine wing adjoins it to the south, where steel supports come into play.

The renovation, which had been planned for decades, could not initially be implemented in 2011 due to the canton's tight budgetary situation. In 2013 the renovation and construction project came to a complete standstill due to parliamentary intervention. Different variants (demolition and new building or renovation and conversion) were discussed. On September 28, 2014, the population of Lucerne city voted with 75.66% yes-votes to an initiative by the Lucerne Green Party to preserve the previous building and spoke out against its demolition. Instead of a new building, renovation of the library began at the end of 2017 and has since been entered in the cantonal register of monuments. The move-in is for November 2019, the reopening of the building is planned for December 2019.

Provisional Murbacherstrasse

For the period of the renovation work, which is expected to last until the beginning of 2020, the Central and University Library has been maintaining a temporary facility since November 27, 2017 at Murbacherstrasse 21. During the two-year construction period, the most important services of the main building are still available here: research and advice, newspapers and magazines, new acquisitions and e-media as well as media collection and return.

Location Uni / PH building

Location Uni / PH building

In September 2011, the ZHB opened its second main location in the Uni / PH building, which concentrates numerous partial university libraries and the library of the Pedagogical University in the former post office building right next to the train station. Since then, a library has been available to students, lecturers and the interested public in the Uni / PH building on Frohburgstrasse with long opening times, a generous open access collection and almost 700 workstations.

Location Lucerne School of Business

Since May 2012, the ZHB has been running the library for the Lucerne School of Business as a third location . The economics library on Frankenstrasse is located between the other two locations.

Location Lucerne University of Applied Sciences

As a fourth location, the ZHB also operates the IT specialist library on the Zug-Rotkreuz campus on behalf of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences .

Duration

At the end of 2017, the physical inventory comprised 1,448,534 books and audiovisual media. The ZHB has a total of 28,018 magazine subscriptions or licenses for digital magazines. There are also numerous weekly and daily newspapers and more than 33,000 e-books.

The main focus is on general non-fiction , technical and special literature for teaching and research as well as fiction in various languages. So-called Lucernensia , the publications from and about the city and canton of Lucerne , are collected in full .

The ZHB has open access holdings at all three locations. At the Uni / PH location there are around 240,000 volumes in a systematic open access list. The open access holdings at Sempacherstrasse include around 30,000 volumes, while the library of the Lucerne School of Business has around 14,000 open access volumes. In addition to the holdings that can be largely borrowed, all three locations offer a reference inventory for use on site. In the reading lounge at the Sempacherstrasse location, library guests also have a large selection of daily and weekly newspapers and magazines at their disposal. Most of the library holdings are in closed stacks and can be researched and ordered on site and via the Internet. The library's special collections contain numerous picture documents, manuscripts, incunabula (early prints) and bequests .

In addition to the open access holdings, the ZHB collects extensive magazine holdings (approx. 800,000 volumes) that have been temporarily stored in Entlebuch since 2011 . Courier trips, which run twice a day, deliver ordered media to the various ZHB locations. As of 2015, a joint external warehouse for the ZHB Lucerne and other libraries in the neighboring cantons is planned as an inter-cantonal solution. To this end, the ZHB joined the Cooperative Storage Library Switzerland in 2014 .

use

The holdings of the ZHB can be researched in the electronic catalog of the IDS Lucerne and can be ordered online. In addition, the ZHB offers access to numerous electronic media via its local network. The DBIS database information system provides access to a large selection of general and specialist databases. The electronic journal library enables a quick search for electronically available journal articles. The daily and weekly newspapers from the canton of Lucerne archived by the ZHB can be consulted in the form of microfilms, but also in some cases in digitized form at two newspaper query stations at the Sempacherstrasse location. There is also online access to numerous newspapers from all over Switzerland. The ZHB publicizes its offers with regular guided tours, introductions and training courses.

At all three locations, the ZHB offers workplaces in different working environments: 110 spaces on Sempacherstrasse, 670 in the Uni / PH building and 90 at the HSLU-W location.
