Diebold Schilling presents his chronicle to the Council of Lucerne (1513)

The Lucerne Chronicle or Lucerne Schilling was written by Diebold Schilling the Younger from 1511 to 1513 . It is one of the outstanding examples of Swiss illustrated chronicles .

The Lucerne Chronicle depicts the political, social, economic and religious events in the city of Lucerne and the Confederation in the Middle Ages. The chronicle begins with the founding legend of Lucerne and deals with events up to 1509. The focus is on the period after 1474. Bis Two thirds of the text are based on the previous chronicle by Petermann Etterlin , which was published in printed form in 1507. The manuscript is kept in the Lucerne Central and University Library as a deposit of the Lucerne Corporation .

Schilling probably wrote the chronicle on behalf of the Lucerne authorities. The manuscript comprises 680 pages in the format of 39.5 × 28.5 centimeters. 443 of which are illustrated; 237 are text pages. After several years of work, he presented the work to the Lucerne City Council in 1513. The first picture in the chronicle shows the handover.

The chronicle is divided into the following focal points and topics:

  • Lucerne's early history up to accession to the federal government (503–1332), fol. 2 (p. 13) –7v (p. 24).
  • Federal history up to Constance: Sempacher and Appenzell Wars (1351–1418), fol. 8 (p. 25) -35v (p. 70).
  • The Old Zurich War (1419–1446), fol. 36 (p. 71) -52 (p. 105).
  • Recourse: From Sigismund's election to Friedrich III. Romzug (1410-1452), fol. 52v (p. 106) -60 (p. 121).
  • The Burgundian Wars up to the Stans Decree (1456–1481), fol. 60v (p. 122) -126v (p. 256).
  • From the Stans Declaration on the Swabian War (1478–1499), fol. 127 (p. 257) -172v (p. 348).
  • The Swabian War up to the Basler and Schaffhauser Bund (1499–1501), fol. 173 (p. 349) -211v (p. 428).
  • From the pension letter 1503 to the Constance Reichstag 1507 (1503–1507), fol. 212 (p. 429) -224v (p. 454). From fol. 218v (p. 442), Schilling no longer follows Etterlin's model.
  • From the Constance Reichstag to the collapse of the French pay alliance (1507–1509), fol. 225 (p. 455) -310v (p. 626).
  • The war against Venice until October 1509 (1509), fol. 311 (p. 627) -339v (p. 684).

The illustrations are from two different painters. Schilling's more traditional pictures are more naive, more precise and are characterized by stronger colors. The second master is unknown. His pictures are kept in lighter tones and already influenced by the Renaissance . In 1577 the manuscript was bound in a late Renaissance pigskin binding.

On the occasion of the 600th anniversary of Lucerne joining the Confederation, Hans Bloesch and Paul Hilber published a facsimile edition in 1932 . In 1981 the facsimile edition with commentary was published by Alfred A. Schmid in the Facsimile Verlag Luzern. The digitized chronicle has been part of the Swiss e-codices virtual manuscript library since 2015 .
