Carl Pfaff

Carl Pfaff (born March 6, 1931 in Zurich ; † June 19, 2017 ) was a Swiss historian .

Life

Carl Pfaff, son of a book expert of the same name, studied history, German literature, Latin and art history in Zurich , Basel and Vienna after attending grammar school at the Disentis Abbey . In 1962 he received his doctorate from the University of Basel with a dissertation on the afterlife of Emperor Heinrich II in Basel. In 1967 the habilitation took place there . 1969–1997 he worked as a professor for the history of the Middle Ages at the University of Friborg (Switzerland). His research dealt mainly with the church, the environment, education and ways of life in the Middle Ages in what is now Switzerland. From 1985 to 2010 he was a member of the Swiss Science Council . As a co-initiator of the Historical Lexicon of Switzerland , he was Vice President of the HLS Board of Trustees from 1988 to 1995. From 1993 to 1998 he was President of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences .

Carl Pfaff died at the age of 86. His grave is in the canons of St. Michael in Beromünster .
