A main entry is the first and, in any case, necessary entry of a publication in a library catalog . At the time of the card catalog , the main entry of a publication was sorted in the corresponding place in the alphabetical catalog . For example, classification according to the name of the author, the author or the publication title is possible. Further entries were referred to as secondary entries .

According to the RAK used in the German-speaking area, a main entry consists of the unchanged uniform entry , only additions and additions can be added.
