Rupert Hacker

Rupert Hacker (born May 6, 1935 in Munich ; † July 23, 2016 there ) was a German librarian and author . He is best known for his book Basic Library Knowledge , which has been published in nine editions since 1972 and is considered the standard introductory work in library work.

Hacker's parents were the senior director of studies, Dr. Franz Hacker and Wilhelmine Hacker. Until the war-related evacuation to Feldafing in 1943, Hacker attended an elementary school in his native Munich. In 1953 Hacker passed the Abitur at the high school in Starnberg , which he attended from 1946.

Hacker studied history , German and English from 1953 to 1958 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and graduated with the first state examination.

In 1959 he received a grant from the Free State of Bavaria to do research in the Vatican Apostolic Library for the Commission for Bavarian State History . Hacker then stayed in Rome and started his teaching traineeship at the German school there. He graduated from Munich in 1960.

From 1962 to 1964 he completed a library training course at the Bavarian State Library .

From 1964 to 1975 he was first a lecturer at the Bavarian Library School and finally its director. In the meantime, he published his dissertation in 1967 with the title The Relationships Between Bavaria and the Holy See in the Reign of Ludwig I (1825-1848) .

From 1975 to 1998 he was director of the archives and library department at the University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration and Justice in Bavaria . Hacker wrote the German-language standard introductory work for librarians: Basic librarianship , which appeared in seven editions from 1972 to 2000. The revisions, the eighth (2008) and ninth (2016) editions, were developed by Klaus Gantert.
