Main post

The former main post office in Pirmasens is a former post office and former post station, which was built from 1928 to 1930 by the architect Heinrich Müller in the style of New Building . After the post office was closed in the early 2000s and it was vacant in the meantime, the building was converted into a youth hostel between 2017 and 2019 .

The building is located in the station district of Pirmasens at the intersection of Bahnhofstrasse and Schützenstrasse. Opposite are the so-called post triangle on the other side of Schützenstraße and the administrative building of the building authorities of the city of Pirmasens on the other side of Bahnhofstraße.

history

The first main post office in Pirmasens was the Alte Post , built in 1893 , which is still on the other side of Bahnhofstrasse a little below the second main post office. This magnificent neo-renaissance building had become necessary due to the enormous rise of the shoe industry in the 19th century, but after only a few decades in operation it became too small again in the mid-1920s for the massive mail volume, especially of shoe packages. In 1926 there were around 500 shoe factories with around 22,000 workers in the city and the surrounding area.

An important technical aspect of the new building was the connection to the railway. The previous building had a siding, but the cars still had to be maneuvered by hand and cross Bahnhofstrasse in the process. The building site selected for the new post office was in the direct extension of the main railway station's track field on a slope to the higher Schützenstrasse. The tracks were laid down to the basement of the new building, which was connected to the entrance level to Schützenstraße via conveyor belts. After acceptance, the parcels could be loaded directly into the railroad cars.

After the post office was relocated to the Moster building on Hauptstrasse in 2001, the building stood empty for years. In 2015, the Pirmasens entrepreneur Ralph Barlog bought the building and used it for concerts and art events. As a result, the city of Pirmasens decided to implement its long-term plans for a youth hostel in the building and acquired it at the beginning of 2016. The renovation with an investment of 11.6 million euros was financed by the urban development company, the Rheinberger Foundation and the German Youth Hostel Association . A model room was built in August 2017, and the building was gutted from September 2017. The shell construction began in early 2018. Finally, Mayor Bernhard Matheis and Jacob Geditz, the head of the youth hostel in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, opened the new youth hostel on April 18, 2019.

architecture

The former post office is one of the most important buildings of the Post Building School within the Palatinate , the most important form of New Building in Bavaria. Due to the demanding topographical location and the complex technology, it was one of the most modern post offices of its time.

The design of the seven-storey facade is simple and unadorned, with a flat roof at the top. Next to the main part of the building is a three-storey extension with a hipped roof , which originally communicated with the neighboring house on the corner of Joßstrasse, which no longer exists today. In contrast to the rest of the building, the main entrance on Schützenstrasse has a neoclassical design based on an ancient temple. The background of this design is probably the memory of the postmen who died in World War I , to which an inscription reminds us. Another lavishly designed entrance is on the short facade facing Bahnhofstrasse, adorned with a heavy bronze door by the sculptor Ernst Andreas Rauch .

As head of the structural engineering department of the Speyer Post Office, Heinrich Müller was also responsible for other construction projects in Pirmasens and designed, among other things, large parts of the postal settlement and a motor vehicle hall, both located on the Schachen . His plans for the Pauluskirche building complex in the Winzler district were only partially implemented.
