Bernhard Matheis (born May 3, 1955 in Rodalben ) is a German politician ( CDU ) and was Lord Mayor of the city of Pirmasens from 2003 to 2019 .

education and profession

Matheis graduated from high school in 1974 in Pirmasens and, after completing a paramedic training, studied law and economics in Saarbrücken and Mainz from 1974 to 1979 . Before working in local politics, he worked as a judge and (youth) public prosecutor in Landau , Bad Bergzabern , Kaiserslautern and Zweibrücken .

politics

From 1994 Matheis held his first political office as mayor of the Pirmasens-Land community until he was elected mayor of the city of Pirmasens in 1999. In 2002, he was elected to succeed Joseph Krekeler as Lord Mayor. In 2008, Matheis launched the Pact for Pirmasens - a network to improve the educational opportunities of socially disadvantaged children and young people in the city. After his first eight-year term in office, Matheis was re-elected on March 26, 2011 with 68.95 percent of the vote. From 2014 to 2019 he was chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate city council , he is also a member of the state board of the CDU Rhineland-Palatinate and parliamentary group chairman of the CDU in the district council of Palatinate .

For the state elections in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2016 , Matheis was part of the competence team of Julia Klöckner , the top candidate of the CDU. In the event of an election victory, he was supposed to be head of the state chancellery , but after the defeat of the CDU he remained as Lord Mayor in Pirmasens. For health reasons, Matheis did not run for the new mayor on October 29, 2018. Markus Zwick , who took office in May 2019, was elected as his successor .

On September 8, 2017, Matheis wrote an open letter to the Süddeutsche Zeitung to defend himself against the negative coverage of the city of Pirmasens in the Süddeutsche, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung and the Spiegel. In it he offers - sarcastically - the support of the city of Pirmasens in the “Pirmasens Bashing” and praises a journalistic “Bulldozer Prize” for the most negative reporting on the city of Pirmasens.
