history

The history of the Main State Archives goes back to 1832 (Royal Provincial Archives ) . After an archive building built in 1875 was no longer sufficient, a new building was moved into in 1901 (Royal State Archives Düsseldorf) . The building, which was listed on March 21, 1986, is located at Prinz-Georg-Straße 78, at the corner of Stockkampstraße 35 in the Pempelfort district of Düsseldorf, and was built from 1899 to 1901 according to designs by building officer Bongard and government master builder Kochs. The Düsseldorf Architects and Engineers Association describes the building complex consisting of a high rear and low front building:

“The exterior of the system expresses the purpose of the individual components in a characteristic way. Mighty stepped gables crown the narrow sides of the magazine, which rises in a closed mass. The windows are grouped together. The high roof is adequately enlivened by bay windows. The administration building is made in somewhat richer architectural forms. The slightly protruding risalits are characterized by gables, the user room is emphasized by large windows in peculiar shapes, the main entrance by a portal frame. "

Jörg Heimeshoff describes the current building complex:

“The front building, in which the reading room is located, is accessed through a central entrance. The house is two-storey and has gable roofs, in the middle part near the eaves, right and left over risalits gable. Natural stone elements such as window frames, cornices, soffits decorate the brick building. The inner development is aligned parallel to the rear facade [...] Due to the architectural quality and historical significance, both buildings were entered in the list of monuments. "

In the 1930s, the archive building was exhausted; a planned new building was no longer implemented due to the outbreak of the Second World War. In the post-war period, a branch of the archive was set up in Kalkum Castle, where files from the Prussian and North Rhine-Westphalian central and subordinate authorities and the tradition of the courts were stored. The archive, which has been responsible for the ministries and higher authorities of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , founded in 1946 since 1952 , has since been called the state main archive. Since 1961 the building has been called the Main State Archives. Today it is part of the state archive of North Rhine-Westphalia Rhineland department .
