Main state archive in Weimar

The main state archive on Beethovenplatz in Weimar was built from 1883 to 1885 as a purpose-built archive by Carl Heinrich Ferdinand Streichhan (1814–1884). Today it houses the holdings of the Thuringian Main State Archive Weimar up to 1920.

The building in the style of the Italian Renaissance on Beethovenplatz in Weimar was one of the first purpose-built archive buildings in the German Empire .

The Thuringian Main State Archive in Weimar was created as the central archive of the Ernestine line of the House of Wettin in 1547, when Weimar became the main residence of the Dukes of Saxony .
