history

The main state archive has its origins in 1547 with the establishment of the residence of the Ernestine line of the House of Wettin in Weimar. Forerunners were the common main archive of the Saxony-Ernestine general house and the central archive of the Ernestine duchy of Saxony-Weimar as well as the grand ducal house archive. For the State of Thuringia, founded in 1920, the Weimar State Archive was the state main archive, which was responsible for all central state authorities as well as for subordinate institutions in the cities of Jena and Weimar and the districts of Stadtroda and Weimar on the basis of the Thuringian archive order of 1932 . After the state was dissolved in 1952, until 1990 it was only responsible for the district administrative institutions and state-owned companies in the Erfurt district. The basis of the activities of today's Thuringian Main State Archive Weimar is the Archives Act of the Free State of Thuringia from 1992.
