House Eltingmühle

The Eltingmühle house was probably an old forge.

history

In the old name for Schmedehausen, "Smithehuson", the clear reference to Schmide can already be read. This was on the old Osnabrücker Landstrasse, an important trade route between Münster and Osnabrück.

Around 1200 in Schmedehausen the border between the Prince Diocese of Münster and the County of Tecklenburg was established . A prince-bishop customs station was built on the border, the Eltingmühlenbach . From the necessity that travelers and traders had to linger there, a pub and accommodation industry developed. In addition, the Eltingmühle house had storage rights . The water power was used to operate a sawmill. The restaurant still exists today.
