Haus Husemann (before the current renovation)

Haus Husemann originally Gasthof Linnhoff later at times Gasthof König von Preußen is a listed classicist building on Neumarkt in Arnsberg from around 1820.

history

After the Duchy of Westphalia, which was previously Hessian-Darmstadt and before that Electorate of Cologne, came to Prussia in 1816 , Arnsberg became the capital of the Arnsberg administrative district . In this context, the city was expanded to include a district built between 1817 and 1822 in the classical style with the center around the Neumarkt. The Prussian state granted subsidies of up to 40% for the construction of the buildings.

The innkeeper Mathias Linhoff, who had previously run the Englischer Hof on the Alter Markt, made use of these resources and in 1820 had a representative building built on the north side of the Neumarkt at the interface with the older Steinweg. This was linked to the post office on the neighboring property.

The inn was conveniently located on what was then a travel route from Cologne to the east and quickly developed into the most prestigious accommodation facility in the city. In 1831 the Prussian Crown Prince and later King Friedrich Wilhelm IV also stayed there . In his honor, the house was renamed Gasthof König von Prussia. In addition to the nearby civil casino, it became a center of social life in the city. After it was taken over by Heinrich Husemann in the second half of the 19th century, the building remained a restaurant as a hotel. The fact that Henny Porten stayed there during filming in 1923 speaks for the continued high level of business .

At the time of the Second World War , the hotel business came to a standstill. At times the building was confiscated by the British armed forces after the war. The building was later used by VEW . In 1975 the public prosecutor temporarily moved in. Later it was the seat of an insurance company and the Arnsberg Tourist Office. The latter still has its domicile in the building.

Between 1978 and 1980 the house was completely renovated and converted for residential use and catering. In 1983 the house was included in the list of monuments of the city of Arnsberg . The restaurant business could not hold up in the long run and this area was empty for a long time. In the basement ("Husemann-Keller") a youth and music bar was established for many years. The building was completely renovated in 2015 and the facade was restored according to the plans from 1904. The building will again serve gastronomic purposes.

Building description

It is a nine-axis eaves construction . On top of a high basement there are two full floors and a mezzanine. On the front, a flat central risalit with a roof overhangs the overall impression of the building. The porch in the area of the first floor was added in the middle of the 19th century.
