Rykenberg House

The Rykenberg house is a listed building on Rykenberg in Werl , in the Soest district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The medieval stone building with half-timbered parts is a Burgmann's house , the oldest parts of which date from the 14th century. És is the original home of the Burgmann family from the Rykenberge . Arnold von dem Rykenberg built the house after 1360, his son Dietrich could not hold the property. Subsequently, various Werl family heirs to the family , including Katharina Zelion-Brandis and Kasper Mellin, lived and owned the house. The Zelion-Brandis family lived in the property from 1624 to the middle of the 18th century. The von Lilien family owned it from 1756 to 1914, after which the town of Werl bought it around 1960. The building was in a desolate condition, due to the housing shortage caused by the war, and several improper installations and conversions had been carried out. The roof had sunk significantly due to rot in the beams and an oak beam in the former kitchen hall was broken under the weight of the floor above. Several rooms were infected with the sponge. In 1962, after renovations, the first three rooms could be used for the museum. The former residents were gradually relocated and the rest of the building could also be repaired. The part of the house on the west side is a massive sandstone building that was probably once encircled. Another component is a bower on a rectangular floor plan, consisting of a basement, ground floor and upper floor. The ogival windows on the ground floor were installed later. Two later parts of the house were built in half-timbered houses in the 16th and 17th centuries. The porch on the north side, next to today's entrance, is almost square. It has been pulled up from the cellar to the roof, and a few steps lead down to the cellar. Presumably, these rooms were used as sleeping chambers for the servants of the heir salters in earlier times.

Todays use

The house is home to the Municipal Museum Am Rykenberg - Wendelin-Leidinger-Haus .
