history

Wenhold House

The building was built by the Sparkasse director and later Bremen Senator ( BDV ) Hermann Wenhold in 1927 based on a design by the Düsseldorf architect and academy professor Emil Fahrenkamp . The two-story, cubic building with the clinker-clad ground floor and the plastered upper floor as well as a flat roof is an early representative of modern construction in Bremen. The building soon became popular as Die Kiste , with mostly negative reactions in the architectural province. The clinker base and the maritime-looking surrounding balcony are therefore - as with Fahrenkamp's Hamburg buildings - to be interpreted as a reminiscence of the Hanseatic tradition. In terms of style, the architecture can be classified into the New Building of the 1920s.

After the Second World War, small design changes were made to the house, but these have recently been reversed.

Monument protection

The building was placed under monument protection in 1973 as a Bremen cultural monument.
