House flat
Haus Wohnung is a moated castle in Voerde in the Wesel district , North Rhine-Westphalia . The name is derived from the first known owner, Arnd van der Wonyngen. Over time, “Wonyngen” became “Apartment”. The property is owned by the Steag .
Through the marriage of an heiress Wonyngen to Johann von der Cappellen, the knight's seat came to the von der Cappellen family (originally from Wesel) in the middle of the 15th century, who owned it for 250 years. In 1608, the daughter Sophie von der Cappellen brought it to her husband Johann van Doornick from Amersfoort. Again through the marriage of an heir daughter, it passed to Adolf von Nagel zu Vornholz in 1765 . In 1937 the property was sold to the Thyssenschen Gas- und Wasserwerke and in 2007 was owned by STEAG AG (now: Evonik Steag GmbH).
The complex was built as a castle at the beginning of the 14th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1327. It consists of a manor house and a mill, which are surrounded by a park. In the 17th century, the now partially destroyed knight's seat was expanded by the van Doornick family to a baroque castle with two southern onion domes and a "pleasure garden" was created. The three-storey mansion consists of a mighty central building made of bricks . Next to it is one of two towers with a slate dome in the shape of an onion. "Haus Wohnung" lost the western tower to artillery fire in World War II , otherwise the building complex has largely been preserved in its historical status. The remains of the moat can still be seen today. The watermill was mentioned as early as 1478. After various renovations, it is still in operation today.
