Wylack House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The house Wylack (also House Wylacken ) was a late medieval manor that was north of the city walls of the Lower Rhine Hanseatic city of Wesel .

Location and building

The manor consisted of several connected buildings that enclosed an inner courtyard. Outside the complex was surrounded by a moat and had a drawbridge for access. On the east side were the main building, on the west side the outbuildings, including z. B. a horse stable. The Wylack house was north of the city walls in the medieval suburb of Steinweg. The suburb was in front of the Steintor ( Lower Franconian Steenport ), which stood roughly on the site of today's Wesel District Court . The manor was the defining building of the suburb and was located a little north of the northern glacis , which was built much later, in the area of today's Wylackstrasse, which was named after him.

history

The Wylack house was first mentioned in 1325 and was then owned by a nobleman from Ringenberg . In 1341 it became the property of two Wesel citizens who passed it on to their relative Adolf von Wylacken around 1350. This gave the system its common name. It was the defining building in the Steinweg suburb until the Wesel city council ordered its destruction in 1587. Likewise, the Oberndorf monastery with its surrounding suburb, the suburb Lew and the suburb Steinweg surrounding the house Wylack were destroyed. This was done out of fear that potential attackers would have good opportunities to hide in the previously built-up area of the city. Before the Wylack house was destroyed in 1587, it was precisely measured and recorded on drawings.
