The former ophthalmological institution in Mülheim an der Ruhr became the house of city history . After the renovation, which was financed by the Leonhard Stinnes Foundation , the city archive and the city music school moved in there.

The clinic building, which is around 100 years old, was completely renovated for this purpose and adapted to the requirements of the new users. The visitor now enters the house through a new extension and first enters a spacious foyer, which in future will serve as a presentation area for historical temporary and permanent exhibitions. The extension also houses a concert and lecture hall for around 100 guests as well as a café. The converted building has a total area of 4,000 square meters.

The house was put into operation gradually in the course of 2013. The music school was the first cultural institute to move in in March, followed by the city archive in August. The official inauguration took place on September 14, 2013.
