The Mülheim an der Ruhr ophthalmic clinic is a former eye clinic in Mülheim an der Ruhr . It is also known as the "Old Eye Clinic".

history

In 1901 the building was presumably built by the architect Franz Hagen as an excursion restaurant and was run as a summer restaurant for a few years under the name "Johannisburg". In 1904 the restaurant business was stopped and the restaurant and property were sold to Johann Hermann Leonhard and his wife Margarete Stinnes .

The couple's intention was to build a clinic for poor eye patients on the property. For this purpose they set up a foundation . In the deed of donation dated February 23, 1904, the two founders authorized the exclusive use of the property "for the construction and operation of an ophthalmological institution for the poor and poor, who can find medical treatment and food there free of charge". The model for this foundation was probably Johann Hermann Leonhard's professor at the University of Albrecht von Graefe , who had left a deep impression on the young student in his lectures.

As a special clinic, the Mülheimer Augenheilanstalt was something special at the time, especially in terms of size and equipment. The ophthalmology was a separate subject area is still relatively young and specialist clinics in this area rare. After the Evangelical Hospital and Supply House (1850) and the Sankt-Marien-Hospital (1887) it was the third clinic to be established in Mülheim an der Ruhr. After a construction period of two years, the ophthalmic institute was opened with a festive ceremony on July 4, 1907, and the clinic began operations on July 16, 1907. The first chief physician was Otto Stuelp.

The Second World War caused great damage to the building. The makeshift repairs after the war changed the original appearance of the ophthalmological institution. Hygienic and technical problems led to a new building in the early 1980s. In the immediate vicinity of the Evangelical Hospital, a modern clinic was built between 1983 and 1985, which took into account the increased medical demands and is now a specialist department of the Evangelical Hospital .

After the clinic was relocated, the old building was rented to the city administration. This used the space to accommodate various municipal offices and as an external storage facility for the city archive . After the decision of the owner, the Leonhard Stinnes Foundation , to keep the old eye clinic and to convert it into a house of the city's history , the building was completely renovated from 2009 to 2013. After the renovation, the city archive and the city music school moved in as tenants. The official inauguration of the building combined with an open day took place on September 14, 2013.
