The Mülheim an der Ruhr city archive is a municipal archive that emerged in 1972 from the local history department of the city library and has been housed in the Haus der Stadtgeschichte since 2013 . As a municipal cultural institute, it stores documents from the city administration that are permanently stored for historical or legal reasons. Classic administrative records are primarily documents, files and official books. The oldest document in the holdings is a document from the Saarn monastery from 1221.

In addition to the official documents, the city archive contains collections on various aspects of Mülheim's history. These include the historical newspaper holdings (from 1797), the map and plan collection (from 1582), the historical book holdings (from 1514), the picture archive (with photo and postcard collections), various court archives and the estates of families and private individuals. In addition, the archive maintains a reference library with around 25,000 volumes on the history of Mülheim, the Ruhr area and the Rhineland. The outstanding individual holdings in the archive library is the Tersteegen collection named after the hymn poet and writer Gerhard Tersteegen (1697–1769) .

The city archive has been organizing the “Series on Mülheim History”, a monthly series of lectures with contributions to the city's history, since 2006. The Archivpädagogik is a priority in the work of the Mülheim city archives. As part of the “Archive & School” project, visits to archives based on local history are offered for school classes (primary level), topic-related work in the archive (secondary level 1 and 2) and advice on participating in history competitions.

The city archive acts as an office for the Mülheim an der Ruhr History Association, which was founded in 1906. The two city history museums, the local history museum "Tersteegenhaus" (currently closed for renovation) and the historical museum in Broich Castle , have been the responsibility of the city archive since 2009 and are looked after together with the history association.

From 1980 to July 2013, the city archives were housed in a former school, which was established in 1899 as a Catholic school on Cleveschen Straße (also: School on Aktienstraße). In August 2013, the move of the city archives, which had been planned since 2004, took place in several stages in the old ophthalmic hospital on Hingberg. The House of City History, which was built after a major renovation of the building in 2009, was officially opened on September 14, 2013.
