Margarete Stinnes

Margarete Stinnes married. Leonhard (born November 22, 1840 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ; † October 14, 1911 in Berlin ) was a daughter of Mathias Stinnes and the founder of the Mülheim an der Ruhr ophthalmological institution .

Life

She was born as the youngest daughter of the entrepreneur and founder of the Stinnes dynasty Mathias Stinnes (1790–1845) in Mülheim an der Ruhr. In 1875 she married the doctor Johann Hermann Leonhard (1835–1905) and had two children with him: Anna (1876–1878) and Margarethe, called Gretchen (1880–1903). A few years after the marriage with Heinrich Stinnes, an older brother of the business leader Hugo Stinnes , daughter Gretchen died in 1903 at the age of 23 years of pneumonia.

After Margarete Stinnes and her husband had lost both daughters at a young age, they decided to contribute a large part of their joint assets to three foundations for the benefit of their hometown of Mülheim an der Ruhr : the "Gretchen Leonhard Foundation" (1903) to establish play- and sports facilities on the Kahlenberg, the "Stiftung Augenheilanstalt" (1904) and the " Leonhard Stinnes Foundation " (1904), a capital foundation to secure the other two foundations. Shortly after the couple implemented these plans, Johann Hermann Leonhard died. His widow accompanied the establishment of the ophthalmic institute in his interest and was finally able to open it on July 4, 1907 in the presence of numerous Mülheim dignitaries .

Her health deteriorated in the summer of 1911, and in October of the same year she died in Berlin at the age of 71.
