The House of Water in St. Jakob in Defereggen is an educational center of the Hohe Tauern Tirol National Park .

Offer and objective

The House of Water is located at 1440 meters above sea level, two kilometers west of the center of St. Jakob, on the right on the L25 ( Defereggentalstrasse ).

Focused on the topics of water and climate, it primarily offers environmental education programs for German-speaking school groups between the ages of 9 and 17. There are also seminars for teachers and programs for groups outside the school. In summer there are holiday camps in cooperation with the Austrian Alpine Association and with socio-ecological companies.

The primary objective is to make the learners aware of the entire importance of water for people and for the environment. The course participants should recognize the value of water, its degree of threat and its possible uses. This not only includes reflecting on one's own consumer behavior, but also developing action strategies for resource-saving water use. In addition to the acquisition of methodological skills and technical content, social learning in small groups is also aimed at.

Seminar and function rooms equipped with contemporary materials are used to convey the learning content. The outdoor area is also included. There you will find a weather station, a national park panorama, a stream with a water flow table, a pond landscape and information boards.

Water project days for school classes

An educational offer in the House of Water are multi-day workshops for school classes from the fourth grade. In three-hour workshops on various topics, pupils can expand their knowledge and skills about water and its relationships with water together with the accompanying teacher and the water school teacher (usually a national park ranger ). On weekdays the workshops are offered in the mornings and afternoons. The workshop participants spend the night in the nearby guesthouse.

Seminars, excursions and workshops for adults

In cooperation with the National Park Academy, various training courses take place in the House of Water and in the surrounding area. The topics include the school programs offered, training to become an interpretive guide , arts and crafts activities or excursions to the flora and fauna.

Summer camps for children

For one week (Monday to Friday) the Hohe Tauern Tirol National Park organizes experience-oriented learning camps in the House of Water in summer . Primarily nine to twelve year old children take part in these events. The camps take place in cooperation with various organizations: OeAV (since 2006) , Swarovski (since 2008), DAV Oberland section (since 2009).

history

With the establishment of a mobile water school in 1999, the Hohe Tauern National Park developed an educational program aimed specifically at school classes in order to convey a holistic view of the vital resource of water in regional, national and global contexts. Two years later, Hermann Stotter, managing director of the Tyrolean national park administration region, suggested that the educational offer should be expanded further. For this purpose, a stationary facility should also be created, which enables young people to experience and research the subject areas of water and climate in the most action-oriented and creative way possible. The House of Water was opened in September 2003.

In the following years, the program offers in the House of Water were expanded and new presentation media and technical equipment (water laboratory, photovoltaic system, VisionGlobe) were acquired. A total of 15,000 visitors came by March 2014.

The architect of the House of Water is Reinhard Madritsch, the house was built with a concrete foundation in wood construction. The construction of the House of Water was financed by the State of Tyrol , the European Union and other sponsors and sponsors.
