The house with the lions ( Romanian Casa cu lei , popularly lion house ) is a baroque "historical monument" ( Romanian monument istoric ) in the northwestern part of the Piața Unirii in Timișoara , Romania .

history

In 1758 the first two-story building on this property was mentioned. The building was restored at the turn of the 20th century in the Habsburg Baroque style in the style of the Vienna Secession of the 1900s. On the occasion of this renovation work, the facade was given a bay window designed as a tower, the two eponymous lions on the roof, which are now heavily weathered, and the coat of arms of the owners, the Weiss family, on the gable above the balcony on the entrance side. On the coat of arms four swords cross to form a "W". It is flanked by two winged eagle lions . The adjacent windows on the first floor are decorated with various mascarons .

Over the years the building has had different names and has been used for different purposes. In 1828 it was known as the Johann Palekutsevny House . In 1840 it housed the restaurant Zur golden Sonne ( Romanian La Soarele de Aur ), later the grocery store to the white dog ( Romanian Câinele Alb ) and the shop to the large flute ( Romanian La Fluierul Mare ). It is also known as Haus Weiss ( Romanian Casa Weiss ) or as a business building Weiss-Grünbaum ( Romanian Casa Comercială Weiss-Grünbaum ).

At the time of communism in Romania , various offices resided here. The building's rooms are currently used as offices.
