The Hausen Crater (Image: Frederic Mallmann 2003)

The Hausen Crater is a large impact crater on the moon , which is named after the German astronomer Christian August Hausen the Younger (1693-1743). This crater is located on the south-southwestern edge of the full moon disk. Therefore, its visibility is highly dependent on the libration , even under favorable conditions it can only be seen from the earth's side.

Hausen Crater is on the western edge of Bailly Crater . In the northeast is the Pingré crater , to the north is the Arrhenius crater . Its age is estimated to be 3.6 billion years.

The rim of the crater is almost circular with a bulge in a south-southeast direction. It is only marginally eroded and not covered by other craters, there is only one small crater along the southwestern edge. The inner rim of the crater falls in terraces in the north and south and is more irregular in the east and west.

The interior of Hausen Crater is essentially flat with a few rough spots. There is a complex peak formation a little east of the center of the crater. This formation runs in a north-south direction and consists of several mountain ridges that are separated by valleys. This is followed by a lower mountain range to the southeast and a collection of hills to the south.
