The Helmstedter Hausmannsturm in Neumärker Strasse.

The Hausmannsturm is located on Neumärker Straße in Helmstedt . It is the oldest preserved city gate in the Braunschweiger Land . The Hausmannsturm was laid out in a square shape and is 36 meters high. The gate passage is characterized by a cross vault. The Hausmannsturm was mentioned as early as 1286, but only got its current appearance in the first half of the 15th century as the last gate of the city wall ring. The Helmstedt city wall once had eight towers. Today four of these eight towers are left in remnants.

The tower guard of the city of Helmstedt was the Helmstedt househusband . He lived in the Hausmannsturm, with two journeymen and an apprentice at his side. He had to "blow off the hours" with his horn, watch over fire safety and report impending dangers. On special occasions he was obliged to “play” with his helpers in the city.

Even today, a Helmstedt Hausmann traditionally blows off from the Hausmannsturm every Saturday from April to October at 12:00 a.m.

In 2002 the city administration had a wedding room set up as part of a renovation in the tower . In 2008 the city of Helmstedt installed a webcam on the building that shows the course of Neumärker Straße from the Hausmannsturm towards the market.
