Bailiff
House bailiff was the title of the electoral official who in Brandenburg - but especially in Berlin - performed the duties of bailiff . He was responsible for the structural maintenance of the castle (or the residential palace), its business operations and its general security and order.
Furthermore, he had to carry out the daily construction and organizational tasks of a city administration in the area of castle freedom and to perform the police tasks.
The caretaker of a monastery was also given this official title on occasion.
Berlin
In Berlin, until the Royal Residence Berlin was formed in 1709, freedom of castles existed in the following contiguous areas:
- Werder from September 19, 1662 ; from 1688 royal seat Friedrichswerder
- Schloss Freiheit (hence the name) built specifically for this in 1672
- Dorotheenstadt from January 2, 1674
The office of the bailiff and his assistants was on the Friedrichswerder ; the street name Hausvogteiplatz still reminds of this. The building of the Hausvogtei or its successor was later used as a police station and police prison.
At the beginning of the 16th century, the knight Hans von Krummensee held this position of trust.
