The Hauterivium (in German usage often shortened to Hauterive) is a chronostratigraphic level of the Lower Cretaceous in the history of the earth . Geochronologically, the stage ranges from about 133.9 to about 130.7 million years. The Hauterivium follows the Valanginium and is replaced by the Barremium .

Naming and history

The original eponymous type locality is located near the village of Hauterive in Switzerland and was named after it. Eugène Renevier introduced the stage under this name in 1873.

Definition and GSSP

The beginning of the stage is defined with the first onset of the ammonite genus Acanthodiscus . It ends with the first onset of the ammonite species Spitidiscus hugii . The stage is further divided into seven biozones, which are also defined by ammonites. A GSSP (global type locality and type profile) has not yet been ratified.
