The Barremium (in German usage often shortened to Barrême ) is a chronostratigraphic level of the Lower Cretaceous in the history of the earth . In absolute numbers ( geochronologically ) the stage covers the period from about 130.7 to about 126.3 million years. The Barremium follows the Hauterivium and is replaced by the Aptium .

Naming and history

The original type locality for the level is near the place Barrême ( Département Alpes-de-Haute-Provence , France). Henri Coquand suggested the stage and name in 1873.

Definition and GSSP

The stage begins with the first onset of the ammonite species Spitidiscus hugii and ends with the magnetic anomaly M0 . A GSSP (global type locality and type profile) has not yet been finalized.

Breakdown

To further subdivide the level, eleven ammonite biozones have been separated out in the Tethys area .
