Havnelageret (also Oslo Havnelager , German : "Hafenspeicher") is a former warehouse , today's office building and seat of the newspaper Dagbladet , which is located at Langkaia  1 in the center of the Norwegian capital Oslo . When it was completed in 1921, the building was the largest concrete structure in Europe and the largest in the Nordic countries .

construction

For the conditions at the time, the complicated construction meant a great challenge. Due to its size, the foundation was laid on rocks that were only at a depth of 20 meters. The foundation structure consists of 130 pillars, which are supported by 1,550 piles. The Havnelageret is considered pioneering in the use of concrete pillars in Norway and was so solid that the fourth floor served as an air raid shelter during World War II .

The ten-storey building with an area of 39,708 m² is built in the Nordic New Baroque style and contains elements of classicism and art nouveau . The facade is loosened up with crane shafts, gables and towers, which reduces its apparent size from the outside. Because of the light pink facade, Havnelageret is also known as the “pink palace” in Bjørvika (det “pink palasset” i Bjørvika) .

The cost was originally estimated at 3.2 million Norwegian kroner , but in the end it amounted to 9.3 million kroner, which is due to wage and price increases during the First World War .

history

Havnelageret in the 1930s

The building, designed by the architect Bredo Berntsen (1877–1957), was built between 1916 and 1920 and is evidence of the rapid development of Norwegian shipping during and after the First World War. Up to 1,000 dock workers kept the warehouse alive for 60 years until its function as a warehouse ended in the early 1980s. Due to the declining demand for storage space, port activities on Langkaia declined and shifted to other port areas.

In 1965 Berntsen received the Betongtavlen architecture prize for the Oslo Havnelager . The prize is awarded by the “Norwegian Architects' Association” and the “Norwegian Concrete Association” to structures in Norway where concrete has been used “in an environmentally friendly, aesthetically and technically outstanding manner”.

After a total renovation, carried out by the Oslo architects arkitektene as , the harbor warehouse increasingly took on office functions. Reopened in 1983 as "Jakobs Traum" (Jacobs drøm) , finance companies, shipping companies and oil companies moved into the new offices . Extensive modernization began again at the end of 2003 after the state company Entra Eiendom bought the house from the Scandinavian shopping center operator Steen & Strøm ASA . By 2011 or 2012, the completion of the modernization measures, which will go hand in hand with the completion of the Bjørvik Tunnel , a new submerged tunnel in front of the building, is expected . A harbor promenade is being built above the tunnel, opening Havnelageret to the inner-city Bjørvika bay and making it easier to reach from the Oslo Opera House opposite .

In May 2008, the daily Dagbladet moved into its new editorial office in Havnelageret, which has since housed both the print and online editors of Norway's second most widely read newspaper.
