Hawise of Chester

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hawise of Chester ; also Hawise de Quincy, Countess of Lincoln (* 1174-1181; † 1243 ) was an English nobleman.

Life

Hawise was the fourth and youngest daughter of Hugh de Kevelioc, 3rd Earl of Chester and of Bertrade de Montfort. Her father died in 1181, so that, like her siblings, she became a ward of the king. Before 1206 she married Robert de Quincy , the eldest son of Saer de Quincy, 1st Earl of Winchester . Her husband died in 1217. After the death of her father-in-law in 1219, her daughter Hawise did not inherit the property and the claim to the title of Earl of Winchester , but Roger , a younger brother of her husband , for reasons that are not entirely clear . One reason for this could be that her daughter was already engaged to John de Lacy , who should ultimately receive a claim to one of the titles of her childless brother Ranulf de Blondeville, 4th Earl of Chester . Perhaps also tried for the underage King Heinrich III. ruling Regency Council, especially Hubert de Burgh , who was enemies with Ranulph of Chester, to prevent the unification of the Quincy and Chester heritage. She herself did not remarry after her husband's death.

After her brother Ranulph of Chester died childless at the end of October 1232, Hawise inherited his title Earl of Lincoln and the reign of Bolingbroke with Bolingbroke Castle after an agreement concluded before his death . She immediately passed on the title of Earl of Lincoln to her son-in-law John de Lacy, who was elevated to Earl of Lincoln on November 22, 1232. Still, she continued to refer to herself as the Countess of Lincoln.
