Hazim al-Shaalan

Hazim al-Shaalan ( Arabic حازم الشعلان, DMG Ḥāzim aš-Šaʿlān ; * 1947 in Diwaniyya , Iraq ) is an Iraqi politician and was Defense Minister in the transitional government from June 2004 to May 2005 .

In 1972 he graduated from Baghdad University in economics and management . Then he was head of the Iraqi real estate bank in Kut and Diwaniyya . From 1983 to 1985 he worked in Baghdad . In 1985, under Saddam Hussein's government , he had to leave Iraq for political reasons. In exile , he ran a real estate company in Great Britain .

In May 2007 an Iraqi court sentenced him in absentia to seven years in prison for embezzlement of more than one billion US dollars.

Hazim al-Shaalan is a sheikh of the Ghazal tribe .
