Diwaniyya ( Arabic الديوانية, DMG ad-Dīwāniyya ) is the capital of the Iraqi province of al-Qadisiyya . In 2007 the population was an estimated 333,000. Diwaniyya is in what is often considered the most fertile area in all of Iraq. The Euphrates irrigates the area around Diwaniyya. The railway line from Baghdad to Basra runs through the city. The diversity of bird species in the Diwaniyya area is very high. This is due to the abundant habitats in Diwaniya's environment, which consists of large arable land, wetlands and semi-deserts.
history
On July 10, 2011, authorities announced that 220 bodies had been recovered from a mass grave west of the city. The recovery is not yet complete. The dead are believed to be Kurds who were executed by supporters of Hussein in 1987.
