history

In 1911, Australia had two unions representing the interests of those who worked in hospitals, the Hospital and Asylum Attendants and Employees Union of Australia (HDAEA) in Victoria and the Hospital and Asylum Employees' Union (HEA) in New South Wales .

The Victoria union changed its name to the Hospital Dispensary and Asylum Employees' Union of Australia in 1914, and from 1924 onwards, union activities expanded to other Australian states. On May 26, 1922, another union was formed in Victoria, the Hospital Employees Association . Both unions had members in Victoria and New South Wales.

In 1930 the two unions merged to form the Hospital, Dispensary and Asylum Employees 'and Allied Government Officers' Federation of Australia . The union changed its name in 1946 and finally in 1959 to Hospital Employees' Federation of Australia (HEF). The HEF expanded to Tasmania in 1961, and in 1986 salaried healthcare scientists, therapists and pharmacists were added to the union.

The Hospital Employees' Association of NSW had existed in New South Wales since 1947, and renamed itself The Health and Research Employees Association (HREA) in 1965 .

After a member survey in July 1990, the Hospital Employees' Federation of Australia and The Health and Research Employees Association merged at their national congress from February 7th to 8th, 1991 to form the Health Service Union .
