The Hearst Island ( English Hearst Iceland , in Argentina and Chile Isla Hearst is called) one of the Antarctic Peninsula offshore uninhabited island in the Weddell Sea .

Hearst Island is located 6 km east of Cape Rymill off the Wilkins coast of Palmerland in the Larsen Ice Shelf , from which it is separated by the Stefansson Strait, which is only 5 km wide in places . Its shape is arched, with a length of 60 km it is 11 km wide. The island is covered by an ice cap that reaches a height of 365 m .
history
Hearst Island was sighted from the plane by Hubert Wilkins on December 20, 1928 . He thought it was part of the Antarctic mainland and named it Hearst Land after the financier of his expedition, the American media tycoon William Randolph Hearst . It was not until the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939-1941), led by Richard Evelyn Byrd , that the island character was determined in 1940.
