Hearthstone Castle , initially known as "The Sanford Castle," is a Grade II listed building in Danbury , Connecticut . The structure dates from 1895-1899 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 31, 1987 . It was also known at times as Parks' Castle and simply The Castle . The building complex is now owned by the City of Danbury in Tarrywile Park. Hearthstone Castle is currently closed to the public.
Hearthstone Castle was built by E. Starr Sanford, the inventor of an early film camera, but was sold to the New York industrialist Victor Buck in 1902. After further changes of ownership, the property came in 1918 to Irene Parks, the daughter of Charles Darling Parks . Irene Parks Jennings lived there until her death in 1982. Her heirs Richard and Constance Jennings sold it to the City of Danbury in 1987. Since then there have been serious signs of deterioration, but there are renovation plans.
The style of the building is based in eclectic ways to Norman and later castle architecture, the outbuildings are (English: the "shingle-style" shingle style ) held.
