Pump sump in the old pumping station in Bremen

Pump sump is a term used in construction and mechanical engineering and describes a container or small space around the suction nozzle of a pump in which the medium to be pumped collects. The pump sump is usually at the lowest point of a drainage system that is used for drainage or sewage disposal ( sewage lifting system ) (sump). By means of the pump, the water or waste water is transported from there to a higher level, possibly above the backflow level .

If an inlet is below the outlet of a shaft, i.e. a drain with a slope is not possible, a lifting shaft is created and the medium is raised by means of an electric pump . This technique is also used when the groundwater is lowered.
