A hedge trimmer is a garden tool and is used to prune a hedge or to cut back bushes and stalked plants ( roses, etc.).

General

Hedge trimmers are manufactured as hand hedge trimmers or motor-driven (petrol or electric motor). Motorized hedge trimmers have little in common with "ordinary" scissors . It has a 40 to 70 cm long sword, similar to a cutter bar that cuts on both sides , similar to the sword of a sawmill . A row of fixed knives are attached to the left and right of a fixed bar, the distance between them (approx. 1.5–3.4 cm) corresponds to the maximum branch diameter to be cut. Above this, a second bar, also fitted with knives, is moved back and forth so that the knives of this bar form a long row of individual scissors with the stationary. As a result, the cutting edges shorten the hedge very precisely.

The hand hedge trimmer is a pair of scissors up to 60 cm long, with the cutting edges about 30 cm long. It has a pincer grip and the cutting edge can be bent inwards, but mostly modern serrated cutting edges are available. The long handles made of wood (or pipes) create a favorable leverage effect and the plant parts can be cut through cleanly and with one cut. To ensure safe cutting, the cutting blades should be sharpened regularly.

Types of hedge trimmers

Single hedge trimmers

A hedge trimmer can be powered in many different ways. A distinction is made between:

  • Manually operated hedge trimmers (these are independent of any external energy source, as the force must be applied by the muscles)
  • Petrol hedge trimmers (they are among the most powerful hedge trimmers, but are usually very loud and heavy)
  • Electric hedge trimmers (Here you have to rely on a socket because it is wired. This means that the weight is significantly lower and the performance is weaker than with the petrol hedge trimmer)
  • Cordless hedge trimmers (the working time depends on the battery and the average performance is somewhat weaker than that of the electric hedge trimmer)

Mounted hedge trimmers on tractors

There are hedge trimmers that are mounted on tractors to cut larger hedges. These machines consist of a moving arm with a large hedge trimmer at the end. They are often used by the state.
