Hedgewars is a free , platform-independent Worms- inspired strategy and artillery computer game in which pink hedgehogs compete against each other.
Gameplay
As with most games of this type, the main aim of the game is to eliminate all opposing pawns before the opponent succeeds. There is a range of weapons to choose from, which in addition to more classic representatives of the genre, such as bazooka , hand grenades or rifles , also include more absurd forms, such as watermelons converted into bombs or exploding cakes.
The individual battles are fought on a turn-based basis on a two-dimensional, usually destructible map, which represents an island or cave and is undermined by water. A player has lost as soon as all of his hedgehogs have been killed or fallen into the water. The available weapons are determined by the settings made before the start of the game. Other objects are thrown away in the course of the game in the form of boxes, which can then be collected by the hedgehogs, among other things.
You can play alone or in a team on the local computer or over a local network or the Internet . Free places among the participants of up to eight teams can be left empty or occupied by computer-controlled hedgehogs. A central server made available free of charge serves as a communication platform and for arranging games over the Internet.
Customization options
Each player can put together their own, adapted team of hedgehogs. In addition to the gravestones set up for killed hedgehogs, their voices and names can also be changed. Furthermore, a special hat can be chosen for each hedgehog, which it then wears for a large part of the respective group.
The game can also be expanded to include additional cards, motifs (patterns and decorative elements used for randomly created cards), voice packs and hats. These can also be used in multiplayer mode, provided that all players involved have received the new or changed files. From version 0.9.15 every player can easily draw their own cards in the game menu.
development
A large number of different programming languages and libraries were used for the development of Hedgewars, whereby their use is limited to a certain sub-area of the project:
- Free Pascal for the actual game
- C ++ for the entire surface outside of the game
- Haskell for the optional game server
In addition to libraries already integrated in the individual languages, Qt , SDL , OpenGL and Lua are also used.
System requirements
The system requirements required in each case can vary greatly depending on the platform used, for example the operating system and other components.
However, a graphics card that provides hardware acceleration for OpenGL is essential. In addition, a mode for reduced graphic details allows the game to be run on weaker systems such as older netbooks.
