Titular diocese of Amantia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amantia is a titular bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church .

It goes back to a lost bishopric in the ancient city of the same name , which was in the Roman province of Epirus Novus . He was assigned to the church province of Dyrrachium .

“The Christianization of Illyria undoubtedly came from two centers, at the same time capital cities of the provinces of Dalmatia and Epirus and starting points for the military roads, Salona and Dyrrhachion. In Albania, in addition to Dyrrhachion, Doclea, Sarda, Scodra, Lissus, Scampa, Amantia, Apollonia, Byllis, Aulona and probably Ulcinium are to be regarded as primary bishop's seats (up to 602), whose bishops are often mentioned from the 3rd to 5th centuries . "

“Under the pressure of the migrations and also by the forces of nature, the VI. Several diocesan seats were established in the 7th and 7th centuries, and new fortified cities were built under Justinian, which received bishops at the same time or not much later. ... The Roman cities Doclea, Sarda, Scampa, Apollonia, Amantia, Byllis perished partly through enemy invasions and partly through gradual swamp, but their dioceses do not disappear, they only underwent a metamorphosis.
