Hedwig Stalter (* 1907 in Websweiler Hof , † 1986 in Dudweiler ) was a German pediatrician who campaigned for the promotion of qualified young talent at the Institute for Human Genetics at Saarland University .

Life

Stalter graduated from high school in Neunkirchen in 1931 and then studied medicine, first in Munich, then in Bonn, Kiel and Heidelberg. The state examination followed in 1936. Based on her origins from a large farm, the topic of her dissertation was: "Poisoning in Agriculture".

She started her first job in the Bürgerhospital in Saarbrücken . The war took her to Bremen, where she worked in the local children's hospital. Her boss at the time characterized her as follows in 1946: "She was only interested in medicine and at best dealt with questions of art". This led her to Worpswede again and again .

In 1948 Hedwig Stalter returned to Saarland and opened a pediatric practice in Sulzbach, where she drove through the city on a motorcycle in order to get to her little patients more quickly. From Sulzbach, among other things, she looked after the children's ward in the Dudweiler hospital. In 1960 she opened her practice on Martin-Luther-Strasse in Dudweiler Süd, which she ran until her death.

In her will, she stipulated that her assets should be used to set up the Hedwig Stalter Foundation in Homburg, through which young scientists at the Institute for Human Genetics should be supported. This foundation was established in 1988. This prize is awarded in the form of a research grant for two years and the funding amount is € 20,000 to € 30,000. So far it has been awarded to 14 prize winners. The first award winners were Wolfgang Henn and Cornelius Welter .

A street in Saarbrücken-Dudweiler (North) is named after Hedwig Stalter.
