Hegenscheidt-MFD is an internationally oriented medium-sized company in the field of machine tool construction with its headquarters in Germany in the city of Erkelenz . The company manufactures and sells stand-alone machines and turnkey production systems for railway companies and the automotive industry in two business areas.

The company was founded in 1889 by Wilhelm Hegenscheidt in Ratibor (formerly Upper Silesia). In addition to the manufacture of iron goods, the development and manufacture of machine tools began. In particular, it was wheelset lathes for the railroad industry that the company eventually specialized in.

During the 2nd World War the company headquarters was relocated from Ratibor to Erkelenz. The focus of business activities continued to be the development, manufacture and sale of wheelset lathes and surface fine rolling machines, in which the burnishing and roller burnishing technology was used.

Later, from the 1960s, the company also began developing and manufacturing crankshaft deep rolling machines. This technology, which is used in the manufacture of crankshafts etc. a. leads to an increase in the fatigue strength of these components, is used worldwide by manufacturers of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines. To strengthen the company's presence on the North American continent, a subsidiary was founded in Detroit in 1966, from which the engine manufacturers in the USA are supplied and supported. The Ecoroll company was founded in Celle in 1969 to develop and manufacture the roller burnishing and roller burnishing tools required. In the 1990s, Hegenscheidt developed the deep rolling technology for crankshafts into a deep rolling and leveling process for crankshafts and patented it in 2002.

In 1995 the railway specialist supplier Vossloh acquired the Hegenscheidt company. Together with the company Maschinenfabrik Deutschland (MFD), which was also acquired , Hegenscheidt was merged and merged at the Erkelenz location to form Hegenscheidt-MFD GmbH . In connection with the sale of Hegenscheidt to Vossloh AG, the company Ecoroll was sold. The development and manufacture of the deep rolling and roller burnishing tools was from now on concentrated at the Erkelenz location and specially developed for use in crankshaft production.

Another technological development from Hegenscheidt from the mid-2000s onwards is the ARGUS railway inspection system. These are systems for the measurement and control of important properties of the railway wheels in use in transit operations, u. a. through the use of laser light and the use of the light section method s.

In 2000, the company applied for a patent for the globally unique mobile wheelset lathe "Mobiturn", which, unlike conventional wheelset lathes, can no longer be used locally, but can be brought to the respective location.

In 2001 the Hegenscheidt-MFD GmbH was acquired by Hans J. Naumann , who integrated the company into the Niles-Simmons-Hegenscheidt Group (NSH), based in Chemnitz .

In 2009 and 2014, the facilities and buildings at the Erkelenz location were expanded. Due to the increasing intensification of business activities in Asia, the export share rose to around 80 percent.

In 2019, Hegenscheidt-MFD generated sales of 125 million euros in Erkelenz with 530 employees. In the same year the company Hegenscheidt-MFD GmbH celebrated its 130th anniversary.
