The Hegigiotal pipeline bridge ( s : Hegigio Gorge Pipeline Bridge ) is a 470 m long suspension bridge in Papua New Guinea . With a height of 428 m above the valley floor, it is the highest pipeline bridge in the world. After its completion in 2005, it was considered the highest bridge in the world until the Siduhe Bridge opened in 2009 .
Geographical location
The bridge crosses the Hegigio River in the Southern Highlands Province in Papua New Guinea. It serves to accommodate a pipeline that transports oil from the Southeast Mananda oil fields in this province. The pipeline leading through impassable jungle area is a feeder connection to the larger Moran Pipeline , which leads to a loading station 258 km away on the Gulf of Papua . The south side of the bridge can be reached via an undeveloped jungle road from the city of Lae, 700 km away .
construction
Planning began in January 2004 by construction company Kellogg Brown & Root , then a subsidiary of Halliburton , a multinational . The construction work started in December 2004 with the erection of a steel pylon on the south side. The building was completed in November 2005; In March 2006, crude oil flowed through the pipeline for the first time. The suspension bridge is designed to accommodate additional pipelines for later oil exploitation.
The north side of the bridge has no connection to the road network. The construction of the abutments on this side therefore required the use of zip lines to transport people and material from the south side.
At a height of 428 m above the valley floor , the span is 470 m. The Hegigiotal pipeline bridge has no crossing for vehicles or people.
