Heiki Kranich

Heiki Kranich (born October 9, 1961 in Haapsalu ) is an Estonian politician.

Life

Heiki Kranich attended school in Haapsalu in western Estonia until 1980. From 1980 to 1991 he worked as an electrician and mechanic in Haapsalu district (then Estonian SSR ). In 1991 he completed his studies in electrical engineering in Leningrad . In 1991/92 he worked briefly in the banking industry.

When Estonia regained its independence from the Soviet Union , Kranich went into politics. In 1990 he co-founded the Liberal Democratic Party of Estonia ( Eesti Liberaaldemokraatlik Party ). In 1992 he was elected as a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) for the conservative “Fatherland Electoral Association” ( Valimisliit Isamaa ) . Kranich was re-elected to parliament in 1995, this time as a member of the liberal reform party ( Reformierakond ). From 1996, Kranich was also general secretary of the reform party.

From January to June 1994, Kranich was Minister of Finance in Prime Minister Mart Laar's first cabinet . From 1993 to 1998 he was also a member of the supervisory board of the Estonian Central Bank ( Eesti Pank ).

From March 1999 to January 2002, Kranich held the post of Environment Minister in the second Laar cabinet . He then held this office until April 2004 in the cabinet of Prime Minister Siim Kallas .

Heiki Kranich has been the head of the Estonian state lottery company Eesti Loto since 2009 .
