Holy Spirit Cathedral (Homs)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Holy Spirit Cathedral ( Arabic كاتدرائية الروح القدس) or simply Syrian Catholic Church of Homs ( Arabic كنيسة السريان الكاثوليك) is the cathedral of the Syrian Catholic Church in Homs in Syria . The church was badly damaged in the civil war in Syria and has been restored since 2015.

Location

The building complex with the cathedral stands on the northern edge of the old town of Homs on the south side of the street al-Hamidiya (شارع الحميدية).

history

The Holy Spirit Church was built in 1912 as the new cathedral church of the Syrian Catholic Archeparch of Homs .

The cathedral was badly damaged during the civil war in Syria . According to pastor Michel Naaman, who stayed in Homs during the war, five rockets hit the roof of the cathedral, tearing holes in the roof. Masses were held even though parts of the bomb were lying on the floor. The last rebels left the city in December 2015. The restoration of the church then began, the roof being the first to be restored. In April 2016, Theophilus Philip Barakat became the new Archbishop.

architecture

The church is part of a building complex west of al-Maljaa Street (شارع الملجأ) between al-Hamidiya street, which runs in west-east direction (شارع الحميدية) and the parallel street to the south, along which the east-facing church building stands in a west-east direction . At the eastern end of the building is the dome with a three-dimensional, three-beam cross. There are outbuildings at right angles from here. Like many buildings in the city, the church and its outbuildings are made of black basalt stones, but with rows and arches - also on the windows - with alternating black and white stones.

Diocese and bishop

The Holy Spirit Cathedral of Homs is the cathedral church of the Syrian Catholic Archepark of Homs (Archieparchia Hemesensis Syrorum) , in long form the Archeparch of Homs, Hama, Nabek and Dependenzen. In 2017 it comprised around 13,000 believers in 15 parishes with 14 priests. Eparch has been Archbishop Theophil Theophilus Philip Barakat, born on July 1, 1952, since April 15, 2016 . According to Gcatholic, the seat of the archbishop is a little south of the old town near the al-'Adawiya church (كنيسة العدوية) on al-Jalaa Street (شارع الجلاء).
