Trephenau Castle (Bavaria)
Trephenau Castle

The Outbound Castle Trephenau lay in the Lower Bavarian town of Neustadt an der Donau in Kelheim of Bavaria . The reason for its construction was probably geographic, as it lay at the intersection of two highways, namely the Nibelungenstrasse, which led from northern France to Regensburg and the connection to the north-west to Landshut . The facility is listed under monument number D-2-7136-0287 in the Bavarian Monument Atlas.

Lugausturm from Neustadt an der Donau

description

The castle was located on the highest elevation of Neustadt on the south-east corner of the city at the site of the later Lugau tower , where the so-called "Auer Villa" is today. A truncated pyramid-shaped tower hill with dimensions of approx. 35 x 40 m and a height of approx. 3.5 m within the city moat has been preserved.

history

Even before the city of Neustadt was founded (granted city charter on May 11, 1273, then called Seligenstadt ), Trephenau was located on a flood-free castle square. This appears in historical documents in 1142 and 1158. The occasion was a donation from a Warmut, Ministeriale to St. Peter's Cathedral in Regensburg , who gave away goods to Trepphenowe and Wipfelsfurt to Weltenburg Abbey. Trephenau seems to have merged into this after the establishment of Neustadt and was retained as a field name east of the former city wall. According to Johannes Aventinus , Trephenau Castle ( Thraephunum arcem ) still existed in 1272, "which is now called Neustadt". It is uncertain whether the castle was founded by the Trephenauers or the Wittelsbachers . An Otto von Trephenau appeared from the Trephenau family in 1166 and 1168, an Eberhard von Trephenau around 1177/78 and a Chunradus Trepfenower in 1277 . His descendants are still mentioned in the 15th century, for example in 1467 an Andrefallenauer; the family died out around 1478.

The castle is also mentioned in documents from 1442, when the "merciful and spiritual lord, Mr. Andre Nidermair" bought a dwelling "located in the forecourt of the Burgk" from Andre dem Hagen . One can therefore assume a castle building with a forecourt, in which the city built the “new tower in the forecourt”, today's Lugau tower , or even had it renewed in 1625 . This is known as the tower near the Vösst until 1800 . In 1783, a description of the city mentions "the painter's garden on the corner of the city around noon, called the fortress, situated on a hill on which, before times, a castle stood".
