The Wipfelsfurt is a basin-shaped valley through which the Danube flows.

location

The Wipfelsfurt lies roughly in the middle of the Weltenburger Enge nature reserve between the Weltenburg monastery and Kelheim in the Lower Bavarian district of Kelheim .

description

The diameter of this basin is about 500 meters and is bounded to the southeast by the Danube . The river can expand wider here than in the Danube breakthrough and is therefore not as deep. At low tide there used to be a ford here . This is where the name Wipfelsfurt comes from. To the northwest, the basin is built like an amphitheater and bordered by about 80 meters high Jura slopes.

Emergence

The origin is not clearly clarified. It is assumed that the development, as with the Kelheimer Kessel not far away, is related to the Ries event . The cauldrons lie in the direction of impact of the giant meteorite. It could therefore be possible that a piece of debris impacted here, penetrating the massive mass limestone plate and causing the circular boiler. A resulting crack could have been the beginning of today's Danube breakthrough.
