Erwin Rutte (born February 14, 1923 in Medonost ; † January 10, 2007 ) was a German geologist and paleontologist who mainly dealt with the regional geology of Bavaria.

Rutte received his doctorate in 1949 at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau (on young tertiary and old diluvium in the Upper Rhine region and the fossil karst of the southern Baden foothills) and was a private lecturer there. From 1953 he was a private lecturer, 1959 associate professor, 1970 associate professor and 1972 full professor of geology and palaeontology at the University of Würzburg . In 1988 he retired.

He is also known through hypotheses and research on the Ries event . For example, he assigned new secondary impact craters and described the rock alemonite (for example from the Altmühltal) in 1971 as the (alleged) impactite of the Ries event.

As a paleontologist, he dealt with vertebrate paleontology, especially of the Pleistocene . In particular, he investigated mammalian fossil finds in valley embankments of the Old Pleistocene on the Main ( Central Main Cromer ), in which there were also indications of the workings of Homo heidelbergensis , for example on the Schalksberg in Würzburg, where excavations were carried out from 1966 to 1976 under the direction of Rutte (the university psychiatric clinic rebuilt there). From 1984 to 1986 he excavated in Untermaßfeld , where fish fauna of the Pleistocene from the Ur-Werra was found.
