Philippe Barakat

Théophile Philippe Barakat (born July 1, 1952 in Zeidal , Homs Governorate , Syria ; † June 13, 2020 in Homs ) was a Syrian clergyman and Syrian Catholic Archbishop of Homs .

Life

After his theological training in the Charfeh seminary in Lebanon and the University of Kaslik, Philippe Barakat received the sacrament of ordination for the Syrian Catholic Archeparch of Homs on August 15, 1976 . He worked as a pastor, diocesan economist and protosynkellos ( vicar general ). In 2006 Archbishop Théophile Georges Kassab raised him to the rank of choir bishop . After Théophile Georges Kassab's death, he administered the archeparchy as patriarchal administrator.

On April 15, 2016, Pope Francis confirmed his election as Archbishop of Homs, Hama and Nabk by the Synod of the Syrian Catholic Church. The Syrian Catholic Patriarch of Antioch , Ignatius Joseph III. Younan , ordained him episcopal on May 7th of that year . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Damascus , Gregorios Elias Tabé , and the Archbishop of Baghdad , Yousif Abba .

Philippe Barakat repeatedly referred to the situation in Syria in the international press. He accused Europe of hiding the central role of Saudi Arabia in the Syrian war for economic reasons. He also spoke about the situation of Christians in the Middle East, especially in Syria and Iraq.

He died in June 2020 at the age of 68 of complications from a heart condition.
