Holy Spirit Church

The Roman Catholic Holy Spirit Church in the Essen district of Katernberg is a branch church of the parish of St. Nikolaus. It was consecrated in 1957 and has been a listed building since February 2019.

history

Previous construction

A first church building association in Katernberg was founded in 1908, because the rapidly growing community in the period of industrialization needed another church in addition to the St. Joseph Church from 1889, which had become too small. The Catholic parish originally belonged to the St. Joseph Parish.

A first emergency church was built in 1933 from the renovation of a hall of the previously bankrupt Blass und Sohn oil factory by the architect Emil Jung . It was consecrated on October 13, 1934 by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Hammels and given up in the 1940s due to mining and war damage. The final demolition took place in the 1980s. In addition, the community used a building in the immediate vicinity as a youth home.

Today's church building

After the Second World War , on July 1, 1947, it was raised to the Rectory of the Holy Spirit with parts of the neighboring parishes of St. Nikolaus ( Stoppenberg ) and St. Elisabeth ( Schonnebeck ). It then became part of the canonical parish on May 18, 1951. Until now it belonged to the Archdiocese of Cologne , but when it was founded, it came to the Diocese of Essen on January 1, 1958 . Most recently, on April 1, 2008, the parishes of the Holy Spirit, St. Albertus Magnus and St. Joseph were incorporated into the newly founded parish of St. Nicholas.

The foundation stone of today's church was laid on February 25, 1956. The Ruhr sandstone cube, which contains the foundation stone certificate, weighs around 200 kilograms and is attached to the entrance portal with the year. The consecration took place on August 31, 1958 by Bishop Franz Hengsbach .

According to plans by the architect Gottfried Böhm , the church building with around 400 seats was built between 1955 and 1957, the rectory in 1958, the youth home and kindergarten in 1965 and the sexton's house in 1967. He took over the plant for his father Dominikus Böhm, who died in 1955 . The architecture of the church building made of concrete and glass in the form of a tent made of overhanging cloths follows the Bible verse (Hebrews 13, 14): Because we do not have a permanent city here, we are looking for the future one.

The two-manual organ with 26 registers comes from the Eggert Orgelbau-Anstalt , taken over by Anton Feith in 1902 and passed on to his son Anton Feith II in the 1920s. It was consecrated in 1960.

Following the decision of the Committee for Urban Development and Planning of the City Council of Essen, the church and its outbuildings were placed under a preservation order on February 7, 2019.
