The Roman Catholic Holy Spirit Church in the city of Friedberg (Hesse) belongs to the parish of the Assumption and includes a sacred space consecrated to the Holy Spirit and a baptistery .

history

Due to the sharp increase in the number of Catholics in Friedberg after the Second World War, the Bishops Ordinariate decided to build another Catholic church. The architect Bernhard Schmitz was commissioned with the planning . The groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 3, 1959 on the property. On 28 June of the following year, the church was Bishop Albert Stohr consecrated .

Construction and equipment

The cubature of the modern hall church is that of a cuboid made of concrete, lightly plastered on all sides, unmistakably shaped by the architectural style of the early 1960s. A bell tower was omitted. The church building , designed as a path church , is shaped by the spatial orientation of the congregation towards the front, towards the east-facing altar , towards the light and thus towards the “absolutely open”.

The importance of the sanctuary as the center of the church service is further emphasized by the floor plan based on two parables, in the focal points of which the lower-lying baptismal font and in the apse the raised free-standing altar stand opposite. To the right and left of the chancel, as well as on both sides of the organ gallery, there are window walls by the English glass artist Graham Jones . The eastern windows around the apse and the chancel are in shades of blue and red. The vertical ribbon windows run towards the tabernacle and ambo and complement the color composition of the triumphal cross, which, like the tabernacle, is the work of the Fulda Benedictine nun Lioba Munz . The windows at the western end, designed in various bright shades of blue, enclose the organ gallery and run vertically towards the two entrance doors. Directly below the gallery, the light strips of the baptistery in Easter yellow attract the eye. The designs for the glass paintings were implemented in 2003-2004 in the Derix glass studio (Taunusstein).

A special feature is the baptismal font with living water, which is framed by seven monoprints , which were also designed by Graham Jones. The furnishings also include a protective mantle Madonna designed by Hermann Volz and cast in bronze and a Way of the Cross made of linocuts designed by the Friedberg artist Elfriede Böhmer.

The bells

For a long time the Heilig-Geist-Kirche had a bell tower, but there was no bell in it. It was not until August 18, 1991 that the bells were consecrated by Vicar General Prelate Martin Luley. The original bell tower had to be modified due to static weaknesses for the suspension of the four bronze bells of the church and has since been a campanile with a pointed roof.

The choice of saints or blessed ones to whom the bells are dedicated was not made by chance. Saint Albertus Magnus stands for the reconciliation between science and faith; Saint Elizabeth for the reconciliation between the East and West of our fatherland, but also for the reconciliation between the denominations. Finally, the blessed Edith Stein stands for the reconciliation between Christianity and Judaism, but also between our people and all the people who were tortured in the Nazi concentration camps.

Virtual tour

A virtual 360 ° panorama of the Holy Spirit Church has existed since 2011. In addition to a virtual visit to the church, the created tour also enables the discovery of sacred objects. Special elements from the church interior can be called up interactively for further information in an information window.
